Rocks islands in beautiful Palau |
This may be my coolest post so far.
According to the Micronesian Bible,
millions of years ago in the late 1960s, a large volcanic eruption killed the
dinosaurs and closed off a large lake in Palau, trapping in a bunch of
jellyfishies.** Over time, they’ve completely lost their ability to sting due
to the absence of natural predators. Today, Palau is the only place in the
world where you can swim with jellyfish (safely anyway).

Jellyfish Lake |
|
At first it was like....ZOMG A JELLYFISH!!! OVER HEREEE EVERYONE! |
|
3 seconds later...holy fuck. |
Palau by itself is a surreal island
paradise, but throw in the jellies plus world class diving and you’ve got
yourself a must-go destination. I have yet to meet anyone who even knows
what/where Palau is, let alone been there. Exotic fersho!

Stalking my prey... |
|
I gotchu! Baby jellies are super cuteeee |
|
Ooh a big one! |
|
It's like a bag of throw up |
Many travel blogs list Palau as the
coolest, most unique traveling experience in the world. Survivor was filmed
here twice, and Jeff Probst says it’s the most beautiful place he’s ever been.
For me, it could have been a fucking trash dump with just the jellyfish lake
and I would’ve still thought it was the sweetest thing ever.
|
Om nom. You mine. |
What a jellyfish feels like: gelatinous slimy
living silicone breast implants with Rastafarian tentacles.
|
Inappropriate, but I had to |
I would probably NOT recommend going to
Palau, unless you’re a sugar daddy or a retired venture capitalist. This is the
most expensive tourism I’ve ever indulged in, Japan included. Tourism is
literally the only thing this country has going for it as far as an economy,
and it knows it. We have a running
joke that everything costs $100, which is pretty much true. You can do in one
day here what you can in several weeks elsewhere in SE Asia. Palau anally raped
my wallet!
|
I can't swim or dive so went snorkelling instead |
|
The coral reefs here are very pristine! |
|
We saw many fishies, giant clams, and even sharks and barracudas! |
Round-trip ticket: $800
Lodging: $100. Permit: $100. Snorkeling:
$100. Pick-up: $100. Camping: $100.
Swimming in an other-worldly lake with
millions of symphonic bright orange jellyfishies bobbing around as far as the eye
can see: PRICELESS.
